Professor Vivek Kumar is a distinguished Indian sociologist, academic leader, and public intellectual currently serving as Professor of Sociology at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from JNU, where he has been teaching since 2001 and has served in several leadership roles, including Chairperson of the Centre for the Study of Social Systems and Dean of the School of Social Sciences. He is also the Professor-in-Charge of the Ambedkar Chair in Sociology, instituted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, and Founding President of the Delhi Association of Sociology.
Prof. Kumar’s research addresses critical issues in methodology of social sciences, sociology of marginalized sections, caste and democracy, Dalit political leadership, sociology of the Indian diaspora, social movements, globalization, and social change. His scholarship engages deeply with questions of social inequality, exclusion, and epistemology, and he is widely recognized for advancing perspectives from marginalized voices within Indian sociology.
An internationally active scholar, Prof. Kumar has been a Fulbright Teachers Fellow and Visiting Associate Professor at Columbia University (New York, USA) and a Visiting Faculty at Humboldt University (Berlin, Germany). He has delivered keynote lectures internationally, including Ambedkar Memorial Lectures at leading Canadian universities, and collaborated on research projects with Harvard University and the University of British Columbia.
Prof. Kumar is the author and editor of several influential books such as Caste and Democracy in India, India’s Roaring Revolution: Dalit Assertions and New Horizons, and Dalit Leadership in India, and has published numerous articles in leading academic journals. He also serves as Editor of Bhartiya Samajshastra Sameeksha (the Hindi journal of the Indian Sociological Society), contributes regularly to public discourse through media engagements, and supervises a large cohort of doctoral and M.Phil. scholars.
